Former Norwegian PM attempts suicide After Corruption Charges

(MENAFN) Former Norwegian Prime Minister Thorbjorn Jagland was hospitalized last week following a suicide attempt, occurring just days after he faced charges of gross corruption linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to reports.

Citing an insider source, the reports indicate that Jagland’s condition is serious. The medical facility where the 75-year-old politician is receiving care has not been disclosed.

Jagland has long been a prominent figure in Norwegian politics, having held positions including prime minister, parliament leader, foreign minister, and Secretary General of the Council of Europe. He also chaired the Norwegian Nobel Committee from 2009 to 2015.

Earlier this month, Jagland was formally charged with gross corruption after the release of the latest documents from the Epstein files by US authorities. Norway’s anti-corruption agency conducted extensive searches of his residences in Oslo and Risor.

According to a letter from the agency requesting the lifting of his immunity from the Council of Europe, Jagland and his immediate family allegedly used Epstein’s private apartments in Paris and New York on multiple occasions between 2011 and 2018 and stayed at his Palm Beach, Florida villa. The agency also claims Jagland requested Epstein’s help with a bank loan.
