Ex-Norwegian Leader Hospitalized After Claimed Suicide Attempt

(MENAFN) Former Norwegian Prime Minister Thorbjorn Jagland has reportedly been admitted to hospital following an alleged suicide attempt, according to media accounts. The development comes shortly after he was charged with gross corruption in connection with his alleged links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Reports citing what was described as a “rock-solid source” indicate that Jagland’s condition is serious. The medical facility where the 75-year-old former statesman is being treated has not been publicly identified.

Jagland has long been a central figure in Norwegian public life. Over the course of his career, he held several senior roles, including prime minister, parliamentary speaker, and foreign minister. Internationally, he served as Secretary General of the Council of Europe and chaired the Norwegian Nobel Committee between 2009 and 2015.

The corruption charges were reportedly filed earlier this month after the US Justice Department released a new set of documents related to Epstein. In response, Norway’s anti-corruption authorities conducted searches at properties linked to Jagland in Oslo and Risor as part of their investigation.

Officials have not publicly commented in detail on the allegations, and further proceedings are expected as the case develops.
