Zelenskyy awaits Geneva talks report to decide Ukraine’s next steps
In a Telegram post, Zelenskyy said he spoke by phone with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store to review the current diplomatic efforts as the Ukrainian delegation “returns home” from Geneva. He later also spoke with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who is attending the EU-African Union Summit in Angola, updating him on the meetings and initial results.
Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of European engagement, noting: “Ukraine is receiving significant attention there, and I am grateful for this support. The involvement of other European leaders in contacts with the American team is important as decisions on shared security are being shaped.”
He added: “Our delegation is now returning home, and I am expecting a full report … on the progress of the talks in Geneva and the principal emphases of our partners. Based on these reports, we will determine the next steps and the timing. We will continue coordinating with Europe and other partners around the world.”
The discussions in Geneva involved a US delegation led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff, alongside a Ukrainian team headed by presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak. Following the talks on Sunday, the US and Ukraine issued a joint statement describing an “updated and refined” peace framework, saying the exchanges showed “meaningful progress toward aligning positions and identifying clear next steps.”
Reports also noted that the Kremlin has yet to receive details from Washington about the Geneva consultations, stating that Russia will wait for the outcomes before evaluating potential revisions to the peace proposal.
